The Best Sweet Potato Pie

Anyone that has tasted the crunchy french fries will attest to the potential of potatoes as a culinary ingredient. Sweet Potato pie is a tasty and delicious dessert course. It has a deep cultural significance as a southern America dessert meal where its recipe is usually passed down from one generation to another. As an alternative to either pumpkin pie or pumpkin souffle, a piece of sweet potato pie is the way to please your family and friends this holiday. You can even give them sweet potato pie candles as a gift to relive the memories of the holiday when they are home.

If you will like to give back to your family this thanksgiving, the sweet potato pie recipe is all you will need to capture their heart and conjure their minds.

The sweet potatoes pie recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Pie crust
  • ½ teaspoon Nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground Cinnamon
  • 2 Sweet potatoes
  • ¼ cup Brown sugar
  • 1 stick butter (melted)
  • 2 large Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup Evaporated milk
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375F
  • Wrap the sweet potatoes tightly in a double layer aluminum foil and bake them in the oven until very soft or for about 1 hour 30 minutes.

NB:You can also boil your sweet potatoes for 45 minutes until they're nice and tender. Once done, drain the water out.  (You can soak them in cold water to cool. They are super easy to peel when cold).

  • Once it is soft, remove from the oven and allow to cool.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and nutmeg and salt. Add and whip together with the mixture, the melted butter, sugar, and brown sugar until it is creamy.
  • Peel the pulp of the potatoes skin and mash in a bowl or blend in a food processor after cutting them into little chunks.
  • Add the evaporated milk into the egg butter mixture and stir into the blended or mashed potato. Continue beating with a mixer until it forms a smooth and consistent mixture with no lumps or bumps.
  • Flop the filling into the pie crust, sprinkle some brown sugar and bake in the middle of the preheated oven for 1 hour or until the pie center is firm.

Serve when cool. You can add a blob of whipped cream if desired.

Special Tip:If you're the adventurous type, you can substitute the evaporated milk with coconut cream or milk. It infuses a characteristic trait that you can retain as your ''secret ingredient''.
