The Origin of National Trails Day:
Our research did not find the creator of this special day. The American Hiking Society is a strong supporter and advocate of National Trails Day.
References date its origin back to the 1980s and 1990s. At the time, trail advocates, outdoors industry leaders, and politicians worked to promote and bring awareness to the nation's wonderful and extensive trail system.
We found no documentation supporting this to be a formal "National" day, which requires a presidential proclamation, or an act of Congress.
